i've made it official (signed & witnessed by 2 workmates!): i'm giving up McDonalds for Lent.

(i know McDonalds is wrong for so many reasons; but oh, i just love their cheeseburgers far too much. this is as good a time as any to try and break out of that.)

what are you giving up for Lent?
winterswitchery on February 24th, 2004 10:47 pm (UTC)
Admittedly nothing. I gave up "giving up things" for Lent years ago, and then I gave up Catholicism..*laughs* But I always admire people who consciously give things up and then try their damnedest to stick to it, because I know from experience that it's not easy :))

I gave up being Catholic years ago... But I'll give up giving up things for Lent this year =)

(I don't like the idea of sacrificing things you like without purpose, and all-things-in-moderation is a good idea. Plus, I'm not giving up anything because the Catholic church says it's a good idea... They have plenty of riches, and I don't see them giving up nearly enough of anything for where it's really needed)

i completely understand xxx

Congratulations!! It's a hard thing to give up...so I is proud that you doing it!

As for me, I think I'll give up smoking...this won't be too hard, mainly because I don't actually smoke right now anyhow!

I'm not particularly religious, BUT I believe in the value of sacrifice, so I always give something up for Lent each year. Last year it was reading newspaper editorial pages. This year, it's eating chocolate chip cookies!

i'm giving up cokes. yes--that's right, no carbonated beverages whatsoever for the vanilla coke goddess. vanilla coke will be the hardest, but i also drink a lot of regular coke & sprite at work, & it's really not good for me, so i'm going to give them all up for Lent.

the 2nd time i ever gave up something for Lent, i gave up dr. pepper, since it was the only kind of coke i drank back then. i have never liked it since, so maybe it'll work again! (of course, it didn't work w/ chocolate, heh.)

I was so confused by your post for awhile - then I remembered your post about the brainwashing of people out your way, calling every soft drink a "coke". Yay the power of advertising! We here at the vanilla coke addicts club will be sad to lose you.
linda: cokefragilehearted on February 25th, 2004 05:27 am (UTC)
eh, it's just a texas thing. lol, i'm gonna post a "northern or southern" online quiz in my lj in awhile that's actually pretty damn accurate...calling everything a "coke" is pretty much a texas thing. i don't know why--everything is a coke. even when i drank only dr. pepper, i still would say "pick up some more cokes!" if i meant that i wanted more dr. pepper. & i don't really think i'd say it's brainwashing, since there are TONS of ppl here who just drink pepsi or something else...everything is just a coke, for the same reason ppl say "mates" instead of "friends" or "singles" instead of "ones".
Effortlessly Controversialmoonborn on February 25th, 2004 10:01 am (UTC)
axtually, I think it's more like people say "band-aids" instead of 'plastic bandages' - because the advertising has convinced us that the single product is the generic version. hence the brainwashing/power of advertising comment. ^-^

And people who always say 'mates' instead of friends are wankers, as a general rule. ;)
    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 25th, 2004 10:14 am (UTC)
oi! most of my friends refer to friends as mates!
maybe it's a south aussie thing. i don't usually say it; it's too "australian" for me. but it suits my friends - they're pretty "aussie" :)
Kirstiekirsidee on March 3rd, 2004 02:06 am (UTC)
it's a west aussie thing too. anyone of 'friend' status is always a mate. *laughs* and pluralised 'mates'

ceciliadoll on February 25th, 2004 11:58 am (UTC)
Haha. I say 'mates'. It's a British thing (as well as an Australian one). What's wrong with it? :P
    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 25th, 2004 10:54 pm (UTC)
i don't think there's anything wrong with it :D
Crystalcrystalina on February 25th, 2004 11:57 pm (UTC)
it's a taft thing too. (taft = my hometown). however, that is likely because taft has a great texan heritage.

"i'll have a large coke."
"what kind?"

    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 26th, 2004 10:15 pm (UTC)
lol, thats funny :D
    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 25th, 2004 08:01 am (UTC)

tûriellovelette on February 25th, 2004 05:35 am (UTC)

Beckyvelvetboudoir on February 25th, 2004 08:45 am (UTC)
I am giving up meat and fish :)
carmelitatoomanystars on February 25th, 2004 09:42 am (UTC)
Good luck! I was going to give something up for Lent, but then I gave up on the idea (heh). I couldn't decide what to give up - the only thing I really thought I'd be able to give up was chocolate, just because I did it last year, but then I remembered that I didn't want to do that. ;)
drink meroseinyrteeth on February 25th, 2004 11:35 am (UTC)
i didn't realize it co-incided with lent at all, actually, but i'm trying to stop buying coffee and a bagel every morning at work because i added it up and it just costs too much. (whimpers) i miss my coffee.
    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 25th, 2004 10:56 pm (UTC)
aww :(
goodluck darling!
and yes, i think mine just coincided with lent too. it just seemed like a good time to start something i'd been meaning to do.
petite_plie on February 25th, 2004 04:27 pm (UTC)
I give up Mcdonalds even that i'm not catholic!
Well i don't have any lents either.........
Crystalcrystalina on February 25th, 2004 11:55 pm (UTC)
i'm giving up all beverages except water, true fruit juice, and milk. that means no soda, no tea, no coffee, no alcohol, and no fake juice (i.e., snapple, lemonade).
    scarlet's walkkisstheviolets on February 26th, 2004 10:15 pm (UTC)
ooh, very healthy, goodluck! :D
