parable
Does anyone here know the exact wording of that parable about the man and starfish? The one where the guy is throwing back starfish that have been washed up on the shore, and someone says to him "why are you even trying, you can't save them all" and he says "no, but I can save this one".

I'd love to know the proper wording of that one. I'm beginning to think it may be my parable to live by.

edit: got it!! Thanks so much _fiveanddime

"a little girl who was walking along a beach and throwing starfish
back into the ocean. A man saw her and asked, "What are you doing?" She
replied, "I'm trying to save these starfish. Without water they will
die." The man suggested her efforts were futile because so many starfish
had been washed ashore and stranded by the low tide. "You can't possibly
make a difference," he said. The little girl bent down, picked up another
starfish, threw it into the ocean and said, "I made a difference to that
one.

here is the exact wording i have on my wall;

One morning, a man was walking on the beach. In the distance, he saw a girl tossing objects into the sea. As the man walked closer, he found that the girl was throwing starfish, which littered the beach as far as the eye could see. The tide had washed the starfish ashore, and now that the sun was rising in the sky, they were doomed to dry up and die.

The man asked the girl what she was doing. The girl replied that she was trying to get the creatures back into the ocean.

“But there are millions of starfish washed up on the beach,” said the man. “How can you possibly make a difference?”

Picking up a starfish and throwing it back into the cool ocean, the girl simply replied, “I made a difference to that one.”

i have that framed and near my door so i can see it everytime i walk out of my room as a reminder. it's kinda like my own personal philosophy to live by ♥
