worlds beyond our own
As the movie "The Golden Compass" comes out over here at the end of the month, I decided to start reading the books by Phillip Pullman - not just because of the film, but because they had been recommended by a few people who also loved JK Rowling and Tolkien's novels, so I figured I would like them.

I got The Northern Lights on Friday night, and I absolutely can't stop reading it. I am so in love with it, over a third of the way through, and not wanting to put it down. You know when you find a book that completely absorbs you, that you just want to fall into? That's how I feel about this one. I've been reading so many nonfiction books lately, from Hillary Clinton's biography to books about food and paganism and tarot, and knew I needed to read something that would lend to escapism, but this has taken me far beyond what I anticipated.

Love love love. I am so in love with this book. I need to get the other two in the trilogy ♥

I've probably spoiled the movie experience for myself (because movies are never as good as their novels), but I still can't wait to see it anyway.

I have the triology. My Dad (huge Harry Potter fan!) bought them for my birthday, knowing full well I don't like fantasy books but he said he's not taking no for an answer. So I'm just about to start His Dark Materials before the film comes out. Him and Marty are already talking about their daemons and what not ;) :D

It's a lovely trilogy - dark and complex and really pulls no punches, despite being for young adults. I like that! I think kids appreciate not being spoken down to as a general rule, and I love the way it explores philosophical and moral concepts.

I don't know why but i've never read the books as most people i know love them, but i saw the movie yesterday and it was really good, so that has compelled me to get the books now. At the conema, quite a few of the younger children were coming out of the film saying that they didn't really understand it, as i think some of the ideas went over their heads a bit, but i liked it.
